History
Originally designed to commemorate the reign of Queen Victoria and the arrival
of the first settlers into Canterbury in 1850, the foundation stone for this
memorial was laid by the Duke of Cornwall during his visit in June 1901. The
statue was unveiled on Empire Day 1903, but at that time did not include the
South African War memorial panels. These panels were added and the stature
unveiled a second time 7th April 1904.
