History
This striking statue and fountain was unveiled in Rotorua in January 1904, the £140 cost
being raised through public
subscription. It was unveiled by Mr Herries MHR on 24/2/1904, coinciding with
the second anniversary of the Battle of Langverwacht where the 7th
Contingent suffered so heavily.
The statue commemorates Sergeant Wylie of the 4th Contingent,
although he had completed his tour with the 4th Contingent and had
transferred to the 7th Contingent when he was killed in action.
