History
This marble statue and drinking fountain commemorates the men of the NZ Battery, Rhodesian Field Force
Artillery. They were members of the 5th NZMR Contingent prior to attachment to
the royal artillery in August 1900. It was unveiled by the Premier, Hon. R J
Seddon on 25/10/1902.
It is an unusual memorial in commemorating the casualties of a specific unit, the
norm being to commemorate casualties or those who served based on region
of origin.
The monument is one of a number imported to New Zealand from Italy. Similar
designs can be seen at Rotorua and Westport.
In recent times a fence has been erected around the Albert Park memorial to
prevent further damage. As it is, the statue is currently missing the left hand
and sword.
