| Biographical Notes | Born North Devon the son of Richard and Elizabeth Abbott (née Blake). Educated at South Molton. Farmed in England and New Zealand. Involved with mining operations in Western Australia and Auckland. Volunteer service with No. 2 Coy, Victoria Rifle Volunteers (Lieutenant 12/1898, Captain 7/1899). Awarded DSO for services in South Africa (L.G. 29/7/1902) and Mentioned in Despatches. Lieutenant-Colonel (NZ Militia) 1902. Transferred to Active List, 9/1910. Attended Staff course in UK 1911-12. Attended George V Coronation in London. Was returning to NZ to take up position of OC Auckland Military District when he died of pneumonia, at sea. |
