|
Name |
Many of the entries for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Contingents on the Nominal Roll
only give initials. Substantial research has gone into identifying those men by
their christian names. Some men also enlisted under aliases. These have been
identified, where known. |
|
Service Number |
Unlike WW1, New Zealand officers in the Contingents were not issued with a
service number. The numbers were allocated in blocks, with large series of
numbers not issued. For this reason, the last contingents were issued numbers
into the 9000's despite only 6000-odd unique numbers being required. |
|
Rank |
The rank shown is that given on the Nominal Roll. Many men were promoted in the
field, and this is noted in the Biographical notes, where known. Men of the
Rhodesian Field Force Artillery assumed artillery ranks for their period of
service, but were issued medals ranked according to their Mounted Rifles
position. |
|
Unit |
The units in which a person served are given chronologically. This field is the
unit under which the person first served in South Africa. Several men of the
later contingents had previous service with another unit in South Africa, thus
this field is not necessarily populated with NZMR information. |
|
Ship |
Includes both the name of the vessel and the embarkation date. For men who
first served with another colonial/irregular unit, this field is generally unknown. |
|
Occupation |
This is taken from the Nominal Roll for the New Zealand Contingents. For men who
first served with another colonial/irregular unit, this field is generally unknown. |
|
Address |
This is taken from the Nominal Roll for the New Zealand Contingents. For men who
first served with another colonial/irregular unit, this field is generally unknown. |
|
Next of Kin |
This is taken from the Nominal Roll for the New Zealand Contingents. For men who
first served with another colonial/irregular unit, this field is unknown. Men
who served in more than one contingent, often changed their Next of Kin (NoK) on
their second (or even third) enlistment. Only the first enlistment NoK details
are given here. |
|
Other Service 1 |
Over 500 members of the New Zealand Contingents had previous or subsequent
service in another unit in South Africa. These details are given here, and run
chronologically. |
|
Other Service 2 |
As above. |
|
Born |
Where just a year is given, this information would have come from New Zealand
Birth, Deaths, Marriages and is the year of birth
registration. |
|
Born Location |
|
|
Death Type |
This is generally populated where a person has met a particular fate (killed in
action, for example) rather than naturally passing away. |

Burial Location |
Plot locations are, where possible, given in the format that the cemetery
records are stored in. This is occasionally different from the locations given
by geneaological sources. |
|
Medal Entitlement |
Where possible, the information here is taken directly from medal rolls. In the
case of NZEF medals, as there is no medal roll entitlement is either confirmed
on service papers, or assumed based on the recipients embarkation dates. It is
acknowledged that occasional errors in entitlement will be made using this
assumption. |

Web Browsers
Fernleaves across the Veldt was designed on a system using the Mozilla Firefox
web browser. This is the preferred browser for one main reason - it comes with a
built-in image 'zoomer'. Simply right-click on any image and zoom in as close as
you like. This is particularly useful on the headstone photographs, which can be
a little small.
The website will work fine using Internet Explorer (IE), however the zoom
function is not available, and any missing images are replaced by rather
unsightly image 'place-holders', something Firefox doesn't do. |
